The unstoppable rise of K-pop: a fan’s story

K-pop, a global phenomenon, has quickly garnered the attention of millions of fans across the globe with groups such as BLACKPINK, BTS and many more.

With over a decade of passion for K-pop and a social media profile filled of dedicated moments, Chimi Om Dorjee has experienced firsthand the highs and lows of being a devoted fan. But is the K-pop obsession truly worth the hype? I spoke with Chimi for her unique perspective on the phenomenon that has captivated millions.

Introductions to K-pop via friends are really common among fans. Ever since then, she has discovered so many new K-pop groups and has been an active fan to this day.

Q: What made you first get into K-Pop?

A: One of my best friends from Sydney came to Canberra and at the time she was into EXO. She showed me their ‘Growl’ music video and also told me to watch EXO Showtime. That’s where it all began. I became a huge fan of them afterwards and would only listen to their songs. After a while, I discovered more K-pop groups thanks to EXO. I remember listening to Shinee, Girls Generation, Big Bang, BTS and Got7 back then.

Q: Which K-pop group is your favourite and what song of theirs do you recommend for new fans?

A: I am a huge fan of TREASURE. They are known for their impressive vocal and dance skills. Each member brings something unique to the group, whether its powerful performances, charming personalities, or standout visuals.

I admire their journey, including their hard world and growth since their debut, and find inspiration in their dedication and success. Also I attended their concerts and had so much fun thanks to them.

Their songs are amazing as well. I recommend listening to one of their debut songs “Boy” which captures their energetic and catchy style.

Q: Which songs or groups do you recommendations for new fans?

A: For new fans, I would recommend listening to the group BLACKPINK’s songs where they produce a lot of different genres like pop, Hip-Hop and EDM.

I am sure everyone would know BTS or at least have heard of them before. Their songs are also really good with a wide range of genres like hip-hop, EDM  and R&B.

Q: Do you have any tips for those wanting to attend a live concert?

A: Buying a ticket for a well known group can be a bit of a headache sometimes. Sometimes the tickets can get sold out within minutes of release. So you have to really prepare yourself at least half an hour to an hour before the tickets are released. I usually have multiple devices open in case one of them doesn’t work or lag.

For more information on tickets sale, most of the important information will be announced on their offical social media platforms.

Ticketek is the best when it comes to buying tickets. Make sure you have signed up and follow them on social media platforms to know more on the time the tickets will be released.
