The season opener with Monaro Panthers and Canberra Tigers put both teams on an even playing field for the 2025 season of the ACT Premier League. Every player was eager to show their capabilities as talented first-grade athletes.

The Monaro Panthers proved too quick and clinical for the Tigers in an electrifying round one clash, securing a 5–2 win that highlighted their attacking prowess and speed across the park.

Despite missing their head coach, the Panthers showed no signs of slowing down. Right from the kick-off, the Panthers pace and sharp footwork put the Tigers on the back foot.

Robert Tkatchenko was a standout for the Panthers, as he controlled the midfield with flair and intensity. His link-up play and vision helped unlock the Tigers’ defence on several occasions.

Monaro Panthers Assistant Coach Lou Gaspari stated in a post-match interview: “Really proud of the boys today. It was a strong, disciplined performance from start to finish. We came into the match with a clear game plan, and the players executed it brilliantly. Credit to the Tigers — they’re a quality side and pushed us in moments, but our composure in key areas and clinical finishing made the difference.”

Midfielder Daniel Barrack commented about the attack of the Panthers: “Victory isn’t just about the score; it’s about the relentless spirit and unity we brought to the pitch. Winning 5-2 is a reminder that when we play as one, we can achieve greatness.”

As the game was tense, it was Barrack for the Panthers who broke the deadlock using his quick feet up the middle of the field to score at the 17th minute, putting his team on the board.

Shortly after, attacker Micheal Picollo sped with ease through the Tigers defence in the first half, scoring with his left foot on the right-hand corner in the 27th minute, furthering the score to 2-0 at halftime.

As the second half commenced, the stadium buzzed with energy, the ambitious crowd roaring with every near miss and hard tackle, creating an electric atmosphere. As the game progressed and tempers flared, a series of controversial calls by the referee sparked outrage among the fans.

The intensity boiled over late in the second half when a disputed penalty decision led to a heated confrontation between a Tigers player and the referee, leading to multiple yellow cards being issued.

From the sidelines, the Tigers’ coach stood nervously, pacing back and forth as his team struggled to break through the Panthers tight defence.

Attacker Barrack utilised his quick footwork down the right-hand side of the field in the 66th minute, booting the ball with power to secure his first double of the game. Barrack’s effort aided his side to a 3-0 lead.

As the game was drawing to a close, it was Stephen Domenici’s attacking efforts at the 75th minute for the Panthers that established a 4-0 score line.

With a change of pace, the Tigers showed the crowd it’s never too late as Mark Milutinovic demonstrated his willpower, having scored in the 80th minute for his side, fighting through the Panthers’ defence. The Tigers established a 4-1 score line in the dying minute.

The Panthers didn’t let the Tigers have any chance to score. Midfielder Basser Silk grabbed the extra point for his side in the 82nd minute.

With a dramatic change of pace to the game, it was Niko Popovich who gained the ball to quickly score with the power of the right side of his boot, establishing a 5-2 score line for the Tigers.

As the buzzer sounded, it was Monaro that secured the win, establishing a final 5-2 score line for the season opener.
