Growing pains: the future of the Bush Capital

In Gininderry, northwest of Canberra, negotiations continue between the ACT and NSW governments around the potential expansion of the ACT’s borders to accommodate new suburbs.

If completed, the new development will house a total of 30,000 people, an attractive prospect for a local government facing the challenges of a continually rising population. A population that is projected to reach upwards of 800,000 by 2060, almost double the population recorded in the 2021 census.

As the nation’s bush capital continues to grow, there remains dispute among community, industry and government around how Canberra should accommodate this increase within our relatively limited borders.
